$ one million project to protect coasts

by Elmo Leonard

A pilot urban forests project along the beaches of the Galle district began a month ago with ADB funding of $1 million to protect the coasts from future hazards of the ocean, with the provision of vegetation cover.

The project is very applicable in the Seenigama and Paraliya areas, hit hard by the tsunami of end-December. Initiated by the Department of Coast Conservation (DCC) and undertaken by NGOs, identified places along the coast will be cultivated with indigenous plants such as vetikeyawa, nodulla, kotamba and mangrove plants. The plan is also referred to as the coastal green belt project.

The Forest Department, Central Environmental Authority and Coconut Cultivation Board are among organisations which play a part in the scheme, director DCC, Dr. R. A. D. B. Samaranayake said. Depending on the availability of identified plants, the project will next be taken to the coasts of the Matara district.

The local divisional authorities will also be consulted. The urban forests will have to be maintained after completion, Dr. Samaranayake said.
