ITI training for Pakistani scientists The Industrial Technology Institute (ITI) recently completed two training programs for scientists from the Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA) in Karachi, the Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR) in Karachi and Lahore and the Marine Fisheries Laboratory in Karachi. The training was provided on Laboratory Quality Management with special reference to Microbiological analysis of water and fish. The Microbiology laboratory of the ITI has been accredited by the Swedish Board Accreditation and Conformity Assessment (SWEDAC) as per ISO/IEC 17025 since September 2002 with respect to parameters in water and fish. The accreditation was possible via the UNIDO Integrated Industrial Support program for Sri Lanka on the component 'Quality Standardisation and Metrology' that provided international expert inputs overseas training and study tours and the supply of equipment and chemicals. The international accreditation obtained by the ITI laboratory is all the more important as per the current EU regulations on export of fish to the European Union countries that requires laboratories providing analytical reports to be accredited to the ISO 17025 standard. With this expertise in place the ITI was called upon by UNIDO to share their experience and knowledge with counterparts from Pakistan within the purview of the project on Trade Related Technical Assistance to Pakistan. The first batch of scientists, who were trained at the ITI from July 11 to 26 comprised the Director, Deputy Director and an Examiner from the Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA). The program involved lectures and discussions on the Laboratory Quality Management System, Documentation and Quality Control in Microbiological analysis. The second batch of trainees that were at the ITI for 10 days in August 2005 comprised two Scientific Officers from the Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (PCSIR) in Karachi, a Principal Scientific Officers from PCSIR, Lahore and the Microbiologist and Assistant Microbiologist from the Marine Fisheries Laboratory in Karachi. The program included indepth training on laboratory practices in Microbiological analysis and Laboratory Quality Management. A third program is to be scheduled for another group of scientists towards the end of 2005. The training provides ample proof of the credibility of the ITI as a recognised Regional Training Centre. |
