Doing her own thing
by Chamitha Kuruppu
After successfully completing her Degree at the Harrow On The Hill Campus in London, Chameeliya now holds the 'NVQ Beauty Specialist' title. She now has a licence to set up her own beauty salon or obtain employment in any reputed salon in Europe. As a little girl Chameeliya spent most of her evenings at her mother's salon. Veteran beautician Padmini Ramanayake too admired the interest of her daughter in the field of beauty culture. She always made it a point to take her daughter, Chameeliya to all international exhibitions and seminars. With the exposure and experience she had gained, young Chameeliya could have conveniently got into her mothers business or started her own salon but she had 'other plans'. With an ambition to further study Beauty Culture, Chameeliya flew to London. Although the 'NVQ Beauty Specialist' programme of the Harrow on the Hill Campus was a two year program - considering her experience and knowledge in the field Chameeliya, was exempted from the first year.
She was one of the very few Asian students in the academy. Although Chameeliya had a knowledge about many facets of beauty culture she values the education she received about the scientific aspects of what she does. "The knowledge I gained about the human body, the ageing process, blood circulation and lymphatic circulation was very useful. I believe it is necessary to know all the scientific aspects of the human body when dealing with beauty," notes Chameeliya. Chameeliya hopes to pursue further studies in France in the near future. " I will be practising what I learned in London for a couple of years, but continue to study further to expand my knowledge," says Chameeliya. " This is a feel, that keeps developing every day. Every second, something new is introduced and in order to be in the trend we have to study what's happening around. This is why international experience and knowledge is vital in this industry," she points out. While studying, Chameeliya had worked part time at the Wella Studio in London. "Working in the Wella salon was a unique experience. I gained lot of exposure and knowledge about hair cuts and highlights," says Chameeliya. In a move to share her knowledge with many beauty conscious Sri Lankans, Chameeliya has set up a free consultation programme. "Most of the clients are unaware about proper treatments. My only hope is that I can help them to improve their knowledge about the treatments we offer in our salon," Chameeliya stresses. |
