Hakeem briefs UN special envoy Sri Lanka Muslim Congress leader Rauff Hakeem yesterday briefed the visiting United Nations' special envoy, Lakhdar Brahimi of the need of a separate Muslim delegation in the future peace process, the SLMC said in a media statement. Brahimi met Hakeem yesterday to seek Muslim perspective of the peace process and post- tsunami reconstruction. "We urged the international community to uphold the Tokyo Declaration, in which the government, LTTE and the international community agreed to grant a separate stake holder status to the Muslims and permit them to send a separate delegation in peace negotiations," Hakeem was quoted as saying referring to his meeting with the UN envoy. "This is a very positive approach towards the peace process. This visit gives us confidence that the UN will actively take part in the peace process in the future," he added. He pointed out that the Muslims who were the numerical majority of the East had become a minority within the merged North-East province. "This was due to the failure of the then administration which failed to consult Muslims before setting up the Provincial Councils". Proper power sharing, land disputes, resettlement of the internally displaced Muslims, the ceasefire agreement and its loopholes were also discussed at the meeting, the SLMC said. |
