High-powered Asian Games Committee to view Kandy 7's tourney

A high powered six-member delegation of the Asian Games Organising Committee scheduled to be held in Doha, Qatar next year (2006) will be in the island within the next few days to observe the 7th Singer-SriLankan Airways International Rugby 7's of the Kandy Sports Club, which is an International Rugby Board (IRB) Satellite event for the Asian Region, to be worked off at Nittawela on September 9, 10 and 11.

The Chairman of the Organsing Committee, Iswan Omar, told the Sunday Observer that the IRB has invited the six-member team from the Asian Games Organising Committee to be present in Kandy as "Observers" and that they include its President, Sulaiman, and Tournament Director, George Hore.

Omar further disclosed that Japan will be the first country to arrive in Sri Lanka. They are scheduled to land at the BIA tonight (Sunday), followed by South Korea (Monday), while on Tuesday, Arabian Gulf, Guam and Kazakhastan are due to arrive. The rest of the sides will arrive on Thursday.

The other countries competing in Kandy are Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Malaysia, Chinese Taipei and Sri Lanka.

He also said that four officials from the Indian Rugby Union too will be in Kandy to observe the proceedings as next year's (2006) relegation tournament with 11 countries are scheduled to be staged in India. IRB's Regional Development Officer, Gerard Gallagher, and IRB's Media director, Chris Thau, are already in the country.

The Schools 7's too will be run concurrently and they include St. Anthony's, Ananda, Zahira, St. Peter's, Wesley, Dharmaraja, S. Thomas', Vidyartha, Science College, Kingswood, Isipathana and St. Sylvester's.
