Heshan Unamboowe does Sri Lanka proud by Upananda Jayasundera, Kandy Sports Special Corr. Trinity College's Heshan Unamboowe swam his way to a gold medal in the 50 metres Back Stroke for boys under 14 at the Fourth Asian Age Group Swimming Championships in Bangkok late last month. This is the first time that a Sri Lankan swimmer of the under 14 age group has won a gold medal in the under 14 age group. There were 28 countries participated in the meet. Earlier Sri Lanakan swimmer Conrad Francis won two gold medals in the Open events in the senior category in the Asia Pacific Age Group Swimming and Diving Championships in 2003 in Macau. In this year's Bangkok Meet, Unamboowe 'clocked' 29.46 seconds in the 50 metres Back Stroke event which he won beating Japan's Hirote Omeri into second place while Kuwait's Efe Dawud was third. However, Japanese Swimmer Omori turned up trumps in the 200 metres Back Stroke event and took first place. returning a timing of 2 minuets 21.09 seconds. Unamboowe won another medal-a bronze, coming third in the 100 metres Back Stroke event. |
