Antonians in emphatic win over Trinity

by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy Sports Corr.

St. Anthony's became the first holders of the Dilip Kumar Trophy when they scored an emphatic 31 points (1 goal, 3 tries, 1 drop goal, 2 penalties) to 19 (1 goal, 1 penalty goal, 1 try) win over their traditional rivals Trinity in their schools rugby match at Nittawela yesterday. At half time Antonians led 21-7.

This was the highest score by the Antonians against Trinity but certainly not the biggest margin of win. This was also seventh successive win over Trinity since 1999. This defeat will not boost the morale of the Trinitians for their all important Bradby clash against Royal next week.

The match winner for the Antonians was their skipper and fly half Saheer Reyal who scored a try and converted himself and also fired two penalties and also executed a drop goal - contributing in all 16 points.

The Antonians started off well with a penalty fired by fly half Saheer Reyal soon afterwards winger Kusal Rankothge scored off a three quarter movement which went unconverted. In the 15th minute fly half Reyal finding the Trinity defence open executed a drop goal from 30 metres for the Antonians to lead 11-0. Another penalty by Saheer Reyal saw the Antonians move upto 14-0.

Saheer Reyal did not stop at that and in the 25 minute collected a kick ahead by a Trinity defender and sprinted some 25 metres brushing tackles to go over near the posts and added the points himself. Just before the short blast centre and skipper B. N. R. Fernando scored for Trinity off a three quarter move and fly half Suranga Pushpakumara added the extra points.

After the breather Trinity played better rugby and also fortified their defence. In the 10th minute of the second half winger Kosala Tissera scored off a three quarter move and this went unconverted. Two more tries in quick succession by winger Mohamed Shafraz and Krishantha Rajapakse took the Antonians score to 31-12.

In the dying stages of the game, an Antonians defender was penalised for dashing the ball on the ground and a penalty try was awarded which was goalled by Suranga Pushpakumara.
