Buddhist villagers shot dead in Thailand Thailand, Sept 3 AFP - Two Buddhist villagers were shot and killed by suspected Muslim militants in restive southern Thailand, police said Saturday. Suwan Nuiman, 45, was shot Friday evening in Yala province as he travelled to his home with his daughter, Thisuda, 21, who he had collected from nursing college in neighbouring Songkhla province, they said. Suwan was taken to hospital in Yala provincial town where he was pronounced dead. Thipsuda was also injured in the attack. Also in Yala provincial town, two suspected militants sprayed a grocery shop with gunfire, killing bystander Banjerd Pansorana, 35. "The killings were likely carried out by militants because they focused on Buddhist Thais," said Colonel Chaithat Inthanuchit, commander of Yala Muang police. Nearly 900 people have died over the past 20 months in the southern Thai provinces bordering Malaysia, where a Muslim insurgency is raging. |
