Give Dandruff the Blues

Your hair can indeed be your crowning glory if you treat it right. Truly healthy hair starts at the roots. But a dark shirt and dandruff just simply don't go together! If dandruff is the only thing standing between you and a closet full of stunning black attire, you're not alone.

In recent times dandruff, which is marked by itching and excessive flaking of the scalp, has become more common amongst Sri Lankans. Although dandruff is contagious, it is rarely serious, but can be embarrassing, bothersome and surprisingly persistent.

More common in men than in women, Dandruff is caused by the overproduction of a natural fungus - which can be triggered by a hormonal imbalance or an excessively oily scalp Some experts believe dandruff is caused by a yeast or fungus, which irritates the scalp Others say that Clinical research has shown that a dry, itchy scalp otherwise known as dandruff occurs when the natural balance of yeast on the scalp is disrupted.

While we all shed dead skin cells, dandruff sufferers have a higher cell turnover than most. Although this is a cause for great concern, the good news is that dandruff can be controlled by daily shampooing and oiling.

Contrary to popular assumptions, dandruff flaking isn't triggered by shampooing too much or even by dry skin. Flaking can occur on the scalp, eyebrows, and the beard. Internal and external factors have been recognised to cause dandruff.

Internal causes include overactive oil glands, food allergies, stress and anxiety, excessive perspiration, infrequent shampooing of the hair or inadequate rinsing of the scalp and hair, heredity predisposition, and insufficient nutritional diet. External factors are cold dry weather, frequent use of hairsprays, gels, curling irons, hair colour products and harsh chemical based shampoos.

The Janet Group, Sri Lanka's leader in Ayurvedic Natural Beauty Care, has just introduced an innovative new range of hair care products called the "Janet New Hair Anti-Dandruff range" - blending century's old ayurvedic formulas with the latest advancements in hair technology to deliver complete natural effectiveness.
