Following the arrest of a number of Canadians of
Sri Lankan Tamil origin on charges of trying to procure arms for the
Tamil Tigers, it should come as no surprise that the FBI has
identified Canada as a major source of illegal fundraising to the
terrorist group.

Widow burning sati - The custom that intrigued other cultures
The practice of sati is a Hindu funeral custom,
now very rare, in which the dead man's widow immolates herself on
her husband's funeral pyre. The term is derived from the original
name of a goddess, who immolated herself, unable to bear the
humiliation of her husband. The term may also be used to refer to
the widow herself. The term sati is now sometimes interpreted as
'chaste woman'.

Tracing the ancient history of Sampur
Kiliveddi is the odd sounding name for a small
town on the western bank of Seruvila. I say it is odd, for it is
perhaps the only place name in Sri Lanka that ends in 'veddi'
(pronounced 'vetti'), meaning 'Road' in Tamil.
