CCC Economic summit to spread wings of development
by Lalin Fernandopulle
The Ceylon Chamber of Commere (CCC) in collaboration with the Board
of Investment of Sri Lanka (BOI) will host the Sri Lanka Economic
Partnership Summit for the second consecutive year under the theme
Spreading the Wings of Development from June 6-8 in Colombo.
The Summit which is a key initiative of the CCC will focus on driving
a double digit growth in the economy, enhancing trade and investment and
creating private-public sector partnership for infrastructure
development and increasing competitiveness for productivity.
Chairman CCC, Mahen Dayananda said the primary objective of the
Summit is to bring about a consensus and partnership among the business
community, civil society and the public sector to create a better Sri
Lanka.
Interaction and dynamism between the private and public sector is
necessary to implement a comprehensive economic policy for the country.
The dual role of the two sectors cannot be sidelined if development is
to be taken to the periphery of the country, Dayananda said.
When asked what impact had the previous summits made on the country's
economy, he said the outcome of the conventions has made a positive
impact on the formulation of policies by the Government and taking
development to the village.
Dayananda said the Summit will deliver results adding that it would
not be mere rhetoric and a set of proposals.
Vice Chairman CCC J. Bandaranayake said the chamber has selected an
appropriate theme for the Summit and it would ensure that the benefits
of economic growth will trickle down to the masses.
Co Chairman-Conventions Committee Prof. Lakshman R. Watawala said the
Economic Summit will be in line with the standards of international
summits with local and foreign participants from key sectors.
He said the event will be similar to the Indian Economic Summit with
the participation of professionals from the private and public sector.
The three-day Summit will deal with vital sectors such as
agriculture, apparel, capital markets, business process outsourcing,
tourism and IT. The CCC has been organising conventions since 2001
focusing on investments. There will be over 300 local and foreign
participants this year.
