The Sri Lanka Institute of Packaging (SLIP) has reduced the post
harvest loss to 10 percent and plans to attract more investments this
year to upgrade the standard of the industry said President SLIP, Lal de
Alwis.
He was addressing the launch of the Lanka Pack 2007 Exhibition
organised by the SLIP at the BMICH on Friday.
The SLIP will set up training centres to improve the productivity and
efficiency of industry personnel.
A company in Geneva has volunteered to provide state of the art
training and technological support to develop the industry, he said. The
packaging industry which contributes 4 percent to the GDP has a
potential market with the demand for quality in packaging.
The industry which has won many international accolades has gained
recognition. Minister of Industrial Development Kumara Welgama said
concessions such as the reduction on duty for imported paper and more
incentives will be given to improve the standard of the industry.
Under the 300 Gamata Karmantha Program over 60 factories have been
constructed this year and with many others to be completed shortly the
packaging industry will benefit immensely. The Lanka Pack 2007
Exhibition ends today. |
