Kala Duwa in the Beira Lake, a popular venue for various celebrations
and a paradise for young lovers has been closed to the public over the
past three weeks.
A spokesman for the Urban Development Authority (UDA) said the UDA
maintains the Kala Duwa.
It had been rented out at Rs. 50,000 for parties and other functions
since it was opened. However, eight months ago we stopped holding
functions for security reasons as the area was vulnerable. At present it
has been closed due to the security situation, the spokesman said.
Several key installations are in close proximity to the Kala Duwa and
those buildings can be accessed through the water.
The spokesman said that during the recent past there were bomb blasts
in various places in the country and the authorities decided to close
the Kala Duwa.
He said the maintenance of the Kala duwa costs around Rs.20,000 per
month and the electricity bill is around Rs.200,000 per month.
