Peace and economic development a challenge - Minister Maithripala Sirisena

A change in the election system and reducing the number of elections held in the country will pave the way for lasting peace, democracy and development, said Minister of Agriculture and Agrarian Services and General Secretary, Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Maithripala Sirisena.

The Minister was speaking at the seventh Business for Peace Forum of the Business for Peace Initiative organised by the Federation of Chambers of Commerce of Sri Lanka (FCCISL) on Thursday.

He said the present election system is an obstacle to build peace and develop the economy since it does not allow people to elect their true representatives in a free and peaceful manner.

The views of good and honest people who could contribute to the welfare of the country go unheeded due to corrupt and dishonest people dominating the affairs of the society. A true democratic election should enable everyone to voice their opinion and take part in a free and impartial manner.

The present election system disrupts peace and harmony among communities and affects the goodwill among people. It causes a hindrance to business activities.

The Minister also said the (SLFP) during its 56-year history has contributed immensely to peace and development in the country.

"All efforts to devolve power and bring about peace among communities were a failure due to petty-minded politicians who put the interest of the party before the country", he said.

He said the country is overshadowed with imperialism from colonial times and today's terrorism in the country has links to various international factions that promote divisions in countries.

"One cannot speak of terrorism in isolation from world terrorism. It is an indisputable fact. The challenge is to balance peace and economic development. The business community has a big role to play to bring about lasting peace and development," the Minister said.

Secretary General FCCISL, Samantha Abeywickrama said it is vital to get the private sector which represents all communities to play a major role in building peace and economic prosperity in the country.
