CRICKET: The Sunday Observer organised and Bata Shoe Company sponsored 29th Observer-Bata Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year Awards Ceremony holds out the promise of a big and brighter show with top flight entertainment thrown in for a good measure.

The cricket umpires from the Association of Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association, Southern Province Cricket Umpires Association, Central Province Cricket Umpires Association and Association of Cricket Umpires Sri Lanka (Kandy) will shortly pick the winners.

Besides the pick of the umpires, there will be the additional awards specially presented by Sunday Observer to the tune of Rs. 50,000 for the Observer-Bata Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year and runner-up and for the Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year and runner-up - Outstation.

The pick of the winners in the Observer-Bata Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year Contest has been well received by all and sundry and here's some of the winners: Ranjan Madugalle of Royal College - winner 1979, Arjuna Ranatunga of Ananda - also winner of the Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year title in 1980 and 1982, Roshan Mahanama of Nalanda winner of title in 1983 and 1984. Sanjeewa Ranatunga - Arjuna's younger brother won title in 1988, Marvan Atapattu in 1990. Muttiah Muralitharan of St. Anthony's Katugastota won the cherished title in 1991.

All the cricketers mentioned went on to represent Sri Lanka at Test match level and this goes to prove that the right people were picked for the top post over the years.
