Tokyo Cement continues CSR activities

"Structural Concrete for Superior Performance" was the theme of a full day seminar organised by the Society of Structural Engineers Sri Lanka (SSESL) in collaboration with the Tokyo Cement Group. The event that attracted more than 250 professionals from all branches of the construction industry in Sri Lanka was sponsored by Tokyo Cement Company (Lanka) Ltd. [TCCL].

"It is our intention to continuously upgrade the construction industry and as a key player, we feel it is our duty to play an integral role in this process", said Joint Managing Director, TCCL, S. R. Gnanam.

"By sponsoring this event, we hope that we have increased the knowledge and further educate structural engineers on the optimum use of concrete, including high performance concrete, tropical weather concreting, and the cracking of concrete" President, SSESL, S. A. Karunaratne delivering the welcome address emphasized the need for everyone involved in the construction industry to understand the issues related to the optimum use of concrete.

"The SSESL is pleased to thank Tokyo Cement Company (Lanka) Ltd. for sponsoring the seminar", he said.

The panel of resource persons for the seminar comprised Dr. C. T. Tam, National University of Singapore, Dr. M. G. M. U. Ismail and Jason Tan. Dr. Tam is a distinguished researcher and consultant to the concrete industry in Singapore, while Dr. Ismail is the Technical Consultant to the TCCL Group.

Tan is a regional manager of Grace Construction Products, a division of W. R. Grace (Pte) Ltd. of Singapore.

Grace Construction Chemicals are widely used in Sri Lanka and are marketed by a related company of the TCCL Group.

S. R. Gnanam in his presentation on "The Present State of the Global Cement Industry" outlined current global trends, how it has affected the local manufacturers of the Asian region and its relevance to our country.
