Laugfs LPG import terminal to enhance supply
Laugfs Holdings Ltd. will construct the Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG)
import terminal at a cost of US$ 10 million in the Galle Harbour by the
end of this year.
The import terminal which will be built on land provided by the
Southern Development Authority will commence commercial operations by
the end of next year.
Chairman, Laugfs Holdings W.K.H. Wegapitiya said the import terminal
in Galle will help to supply gas to the southern and eastern areas and
overcome the shortage in the country. Land preparations and terminal
designing are being done with the assistance of the Colombo Dockyard and
foreign companies.
"Ships calling at the Galle Port will discharge LPG through the
pipeline bordering the Colombo-Matara Highway", Wegapitiya said.
Laugfs has been importing gas through the Colombo Port for the past
six years but due to congestion and security restrictions on discharging
gas in the night the cost has increased."By setting up the new terminal
with a capacity of 6,000mt we hope to enhance supply efficiency of
Laugfs gas throughout the country and increase our market share," he
said. The demand for LPG has increased over the years and importing in
small quantities is not sufficient.
"We have planned to increase our current market share of 30 percent
through stiff competition," Wegapitiya said.
