"The temporary suspension imposed on Pakistan by the Commonwealth of
Nations on Friday wasn't a good day for the country. However, it was a
great day for Sri Lanka and Pakistan since many Sri Lankans expressed
their support and sympathy for Pakistan.
Since morning I have had a number of telephone calls said the High
Commissioner of Pakistan, Shahzad A. Chaudhry, who was the chief guest
at the 46th AGM of the Ceylon National Chamber of Industries.
He said all members of the government, the opposition and members of
the civil society had assured him of their support to Pakistan. "We
greatly appreciate and was encouraged by this gesture and are grateful
to all Sri Lankans and Pakistanis. The historical ties between both
nations are deeply rooted and the people have supported each other in
times of need," the High Commissioner said.
Referring to the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) signed by both countries,
he said exports to Pakistan have increased tremendously. However,
exports to Pakistan have seen a reduction of 11 per cent since June this
year.
"Seemingly something was wrong and Sri Lankan businessmen should pay
attention to it, he said. The High Commissioner said the investment
climate in Pakistan has been made easy and invited Sri Lankan
businessman to invest at least US$ 150,000. |
