Nine held with Jelly Fish

Nine people including five Tamils were arrested by the Tangalle police with a stock of Jelly Fish. Though catching jelly fish is illegal in the island, these people were arrested with the Jelly Fish stock at the Tangalle beach on Friday night.


17 LTTEers killed in clashes

The Security Forces killed 17 LTTE terrorists in a series of clashes across the embattled north, the military said yesterday. The Army troops and terrorists exchanged small arms fire in the Mannar district on Friday, leaving 12 Tigers dead. Three soldiers were wounded.


SI and PC killed in explosion

A claymore mine explosion in Batticaloa killed a Police Sub Inspector and a constable. Official sources said that the claymore mine explosion took place around noon yesterday at Kaludaweli, some four kilometres off Kalawanchikudi in the Batticaloa district.


Scourge of HIV/AIDS

US Ambassador Robert O'Blake said that HIV/AIDS has had a profoundly negative social and economic impact on countries including the United States. Addressing the Sri Lankan Business Federation on HIV/AIDS, he emphasized the need to educate commercial sector employees on HIV/AIDS.


More LTTE activities in Tamil Nadu

LTTE activities are reportedly on the increase in the State of Tamil Nadu. The main Opposition in the State of Tamil Nadu Anna Dravida Munnetra Kalagam and the Tamil Nadu Congress party have warned that the State was increasingly becoming a safe haven for the LTTE in recent days.


CRC anniversary to be celebrated

The 18th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), an international treaty which sets out ground rules for a better life for all children and the most widely ratified Human Rights Agreement in the World is being celebrated this week.
