Reflections in colour

An exhibition of oil paintings by Jayani Pinnewale:

Jayani Pinnewala's biggest achievement in painting is the way she has developed the art of using different colours to bring her thoughts very vividly on to the canvas. She is quite capable of selecting colours and shades to create a painting, quite eye catching.

She says that 'Every time I commence to work on a painting I feel as if I am in meditation. I concentrate on one subject trying to achieve what I have in my mind by transferring it into the canvas. The whole process gives me mental peace, contentment. If I do a painting of a jungle, I feel I am in that jungle already and finally when I see the end result I feel quite contended.'

Jayani, a product of Visaka Vidyalaya, Bambalapitiya, had excelled in studies and later joined the Sri Lanka Administrative Service. She served the government holding various senior positions in Ministries and Departments and was also a Deputy Ambassador and Acting Ambassador of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Italy. She started painting as a hobby while serving in Italy.

Jayani feels that if she had not lived in Italy she would never have got the opportunity or the wish to paint. During this period, her paintings were displayed at joint exhibitions held in Rome.

Her first solo exhibition was held in the Isle of Capri, South of Italy and was a great success. Since her return to Sri Lanka she has held a number of exhibitions in Colombo very successfully. Jayani in her paintings goes for the brighter side of life, the warmth of the people, landscapes, animals and flowers.

'Girl by the Piano' and 'Lovable' are some of her favourites. Her masterpiece in landscape paintings is 'Nature's Delight.' The impressions and feelings created in the painting are quite unique. The 'Sunset of age', 'Helpless' and 'Emptiness' are different as they create a picture of the loneliness and isolation one experiences in life.

Art is beautiful, fascinating; even a sad thought transformed in to canvas could produce a painting that attracts one's eye.

The famous painter Renoir once said 'Greeks believe that Gods visit the earth looking for love and beauty of a wonderland.' 'Yes, Earth is a wonderland and I like to paint it.'

'Reflections in colour' will be held on the following days, at the Lionel Wendt Gallery. 17th December, from 11.30 to 7.30, 18th December , from 9.30 to 7.30, 19th December, from 9.30 to 7.30
