This is the world’s largest annual pre-collegiate celebration of
science. Intel ISEF brings together more than 1,500 students from over
50 countries to compete for over 900 prizes.
There is four million US dollars to be won, including scholarships,
tuition grants, internships, scientific field trips and the grand prize:
a trip to attend the Nobel Prize Ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden.
Yasith, Praveej and Dinesh were the winners of the 2007 Junior
Inventor of the Year competition organised by the Institution of
Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL). The Sri Lankan team for the year 2009 will
be selected from the winners of the Sri Lanka Science and Engineering
Fair (SLSEF) scheduled to be held this December.
To be eligible for this amazing opportunity, you can take part in
either the Junior Inventor of the Year competition conducted by the IESL
or the Science Research Project Competition organised by the National
Science Foundation (NSF) of Sri Lanka.
Junior Inventor of the Year Competition
This annual event conducted island-wide by the IESL promotes creative
and innovative thinking among schoolchildren. It is open to all Sri
Lankan children and youth in the age group of 12-20 years. Entries will
close in May and the competition will be held from June.
Innovations and research projects in engineering will be considered
for this competition.
For more details contact the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka, No.

Science Research Project Competition
This gives you the chance to stretch your imagination! The
competition will be held for the first time this year for schoolchildren
and other youth under the age of 20 years as of December 31, 2008.
Research projects conducted in science will be considered for this
competition. Those who are interested can send a project proposal (a
brief description about the project) to the NSF which will guide the
selected students to improve their projects.
To learn more about this competition, visit the NSF website at
http://www.nsf.ac.lk/spd/srpc/ or contact the Science Popularisation
Division, National Science Foundation, No. 47/5 Maitland Place, Colombo
7; Tel: 0112696771-3, 0112675017.
The SLSEF is a platform for science students to discover their
scientific genius and win public recognition at national and
international levels. One of its main objectives is to create a research
culture among the youth in the country.
The Ministry of Education fully supports and assists in conducting
the SLSEF.
The Ministry will grant official clearance to teachers and students
to participate at the Intel ISEF and provide guidance to students in
preparation of projects through provincial/zonal school authorities.
Intel will meet all expenses of all the children participating at the
International competition (Intel ISEF).
The NSF conducts introductory programmes for schoolchildren to
introduce them to the SLSEF and interested schools can contact NSF for
more details.
Now is the time to bring out the scientist in you! Submit your
research projects and inventions and be a winner and represent Sri Lanka
at Intel ISEF in 2009.
