Glow of a candle light

Children love books first to enjoy the pictures and then to learn the stories and enhance knowledge. But how many children in our country are fortunate to have access to a single book. The children studying in rural schools don't have access to a book even in their libraries which deprives them of the vast knowledge they can acquire.

AFLAC International an organisation started by captain Elmo Jayawardena identified this need in rural schools, and as the name suggests Association for Light a Candle (AFLAC) started lighting the candles of knowledge in schools and thereby in the hearts of the children. With the little money AFLAC could spare, the library project was launched.

From Siyambalangamuwa to Mangalagama, from Weerawila to Indigaswewa from Kantale to Dambulla, the AFLAC Libraries have sprung up. Presently there are 45 such libraries.

It was initially planned to establish very small libraries in remote villages all over the island. From Siyambalangamuwa to Mangalagama, from Weerawila to Indigaswewa from Kantale to Dambulla, the AFLAC Libraries sprung up. Presently there are 45 such libraries.

Let us extend our hand towards these bright students who are denied of achieving their dreams by the chains of poverty. Let us help in any little way we could (by donating a single book, by volunteering, by kind sponsorship). Let's light the candles, let's start by lighting one.
