Cambrians take major honours in drawn game

CRICKET: The 58th Battle of the Golds between Prince of Wales’ College and St. Sebastian’s College ended in a tame draw for the thirty first consecutive year at Tyronne Fernando Stadium, Moratuwa.

However Cambrians grabbed major honours in this rain hit game. Cambrians resuming at the overnight score of 170 for 4 declared at 257 for 6 with Sri Lanka Schools Cricketer Rumesh Thirimanne scoring an unbeaten elegant chanceless 100 runs facing 171 balls in 221 minutes.

He had eight hits to the ropes and one six. He became the thirteenth player to score a century for Cambrians in this Big Match Series. Thirimanne and Chamath Kariyawasam put on an unbroken seventh wicket partnership of 63 runs with Kariyawasam Contributing a quick 43 runs. Anuk de Alwis and Sanjaya Fernando bagged three wickets each for Sebs.

More fancied Sebs started disastrously losing wickets at regular intervals and they were all out for 153 runs Vice Captain Trevin Fernando was the sheet anchor for his side and scored a fine 56 runs with six fours and a towering six. Shivantha Kumara was the pick of the bowlers for Cambrians with 3 for 26 following on Sebs could not occupy the create and play stopped at 5 p.m. owing to bad light.
