Madugalle chief guest
Former Sri Lanka Test captain and current ICC Chief Match Referee,
Ranjan Madugalle will be the chief guest at this year’s Observer-Mobitel
Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year contest.
Incidentally, it was Madugalle, then as one of the most outstanding
batsmen at Royal College, who won the Observer Schoolboy Cricketer of
the year title at the inaugural awards ceremony held in 1979. It would
be a great honour to have Madugalle as the chief guest at next month’s
mega awards ceremony.
It was Madugalle who led the Reid Avenue school at the centenary
Royal-Thomian cricket encounter in 1979 and in the same year, he won the
most prestigious schools cricket title.
It was this first ever Observer schoolboy star, who went on to
captain NCC and Sri Lanka with distinction and now heads the eminent ICC
panel of match referees.
Chairman of Sri Lanka Cricket and Sri Lanka’s World Cup winning
captain in 1996, Arjuna Ranatunga, who too won the Observer Schoolboy
Cricketer of the Year Award twice in 1980 and in 1982, will also grace
the occasion.
