Dilanka Wijesekera expected to lead CH in 'A' div. rugby
RUGBY: Sri Lanka rugby captain and flanker Dilanka Wijesekera is
strongly tipped to regain the skipper's armband over hooker Achala
Perera for CH & FC for the 2009 inter-club rugby season, sources
attached to the Gymkhana Club told Sunday Observer.
Wijesekera, who led Sri Lanka at the Asian Five Nations - Division-1
tournament in Chinese Taipei last November, in their outing against the
hosts, has already led the Maitland Crescent based rugby club in the
past.
But, his ability to lead by example plus his never-say-die approach
could tilt scales in the flanker's favour over hooker Achala Perera.
Perera, who also has led CH & FC in the injury-enforced absence of
Wijesekera a few seasons ago, is also an experienced player. The CH & FC
Rugby Committee is set to make a final decision on the captaincy
shortly.
CH is also expected to look for a new head coach after one of their
former stalwarts flanker Bimal Perera had consented to coach Air Force
SC, with another former coach Wazil Hafeez having joined S. Thomas'
College, Mount Lavinia as its Rugby Consultant.
CH & FC, a force to be reckoned within the inter-club rugby arena in
the 1980s and 1990s, last clinched the 'A' Division League title in 2000
under 'number eight' Nazeem Mohammed.
The previous success in the Clifford Cup knock-out tourney was
achieved way back in 1994 under Nishantha Dias.
