The Commissioner of Motor Traffic has issued over 3,000 new Smart
Card driving licences since the introduction of the card six days ago.
Commissioner General of Motor Traffic, Bandula Wijayaratne said that
the staff is now geared to issue more licences and hopes to release
1,000 a day from the end of the month.
A new card was launched last week with an inbuilt chip, which
provides all information about the owner, fingerprint, summary of
traffic offenses if any and special measures to stop counterfeit.
He said that they only managed to issue 90 Smart Cards on the first
day, 350 on Monday and this has now increased to 675 per day from the
Werahara office.
He also emphasised that those with driving licences do not have to
apply for new licences immediately.
This is pending a future decision by the Government.
