Listening to May and Che-Che (Rochelle) singing at the Margharita
Blue, Galadari is an experience. Their crystal clear voices ring around
clearly as they sing awesome songs like Tina Turner’s `Simply the Best’
and that popular hit `It’s Raining Men’.
With attractive looks and a figure to thrill, chatting with the shoes
from Philippines is interesting as they are very humble and
down-to-earth despite gaining popularity for the short time they have
come to Sri Lanka. Speaking to Sunday Observer mag, Che-Che said, “May’s
mother and my mother are sisters which makes us first cousins”.
Che-Che has more experience in the music scene having played for
various gigs in the Middle East, Indonesia, USA and even Europe.
Starting her career as a good dancer, Che-Che said that after she gained
the confidence to face the stage, she started performing. Eventually she
trained in singing as she had a flair for it and then travelled to sing
her heart out around the world.
“I feel my musical career has developed over the years and it is
important to have self-determination and practice when performing to an
international audience”, she said. She said, “It’s good that Che-Che
performs with me because it helps me understand and learn more about the
music and performance onstage”.
Talking about their time in Sri Lanka, May said, “Sri Lanka is a
beautiful country and we are happy to give music to Sri Lankans at the
time of peace. Even though there are strict security measures, we are
happy that we are safe”.
Also, these lovely ladies said that they hope Sri Lankans can teach
them a few good songs to understand the lovely `baila’ culture. Backed
by Benjy’s outstanding band “Aquarius”, has since December of last year
been bringing down dynamic female vocalists from the Philippines to
entertain packed crowds at the Margharita Blue every Thursday, Friday
and Saturday.
Aquarius’ bassist and leader Benjy Ranabaha is quite a popular figure
with his great personality and wonderful grooves while funky Shiran
Munasinghe plays drums and vocals.
Daring Dhanushka Jayasekera creates interesting rhythms on lead
guitar and vocals while Ray De Silva works wonders on
keyboards.Providing the soul to the “Aquarius” music is Mano on
Saxophone who they say can make many hearts melt.
