A different new year

The Gods of Nallur Kovil,
The tender leaves of palmyra trees,
The gun smoke scented sea,
The homeless birds,
This New Year will hear,
Not the sounds of guns
But the echo of crackers of joy,
Not the cries of war victims,
But the ecstasy of home dwellers,
Not the commands of tyrants
But the Message of Peace
Being carried by Brothers of South
To the Brothers of North
Conveying the everlasting
Fraternity and Sri Lankanness!

Jayalath Basnagoda

Dear Soldiers,

Now you have eradicated
The menace of terrorism
Completely.........
No more shells and fire guns
No more de facto Elam.

We public feel
The real freedom ........
It's true

You are incomparable
Epochal personalities.
Now, because of you
We hear the stentorian
Voice of liberation ........

Dear Soldiers,
We appreciate your devotion
And we hail you!

Piumi Shani Fernando.

Brave heroes......

You understood the value of our beloved motherland
And thought that dying for it is better...
You made efforts to break the enemy
And make this country ours only forever...
You never thought of food or weather
And sacrificed your today for our tomorrow...
You worked as a golden fence around our country
And undergo so many difficulties...
You are the true heroes of our nation
And are the bravest among all...
Taking the gun on to your hands
And going further among hardships...
Brave soldiers of our Mother Lanka !!!
We wish you to get more and more strength
To go further...
May the blessings of the Triple Gem
Be with you always....

Shashini Nisansala

Dawn of a new era

Came down the valley
Musketeers in a group
Firing balls of flare
Filled with smoke
Uneasy and unpleasant
Gave the command, the leader
Forced and chased
Neither peace nor fisticuffs
But obedience achieved
Stood up in a queue in morose mood
Hanging a bag filled with utmost utilizes
Left the dwellings shedding tears
All the villagers were transported
Kept round the bunkers in Pudikudirippu
Thoroughly soaked with empty stomach
Not even a drop of water

Assigned to safeguard the musketeers
The beloved colleges of Demagogue
Velupillai Prabhakaran
Paid for his mistakes
Came the gentlemen at last
Filled their hearts with loving kindness
Chased the inhuman musketeers
Protected from harm innocent
Not only shelter food and clothing
Giving to the displaced
But also education and compassion
Marked the dawn of the new era.

I pray for you...

People run here and there
and shout raising their voices
I just stopped
and observed them for a while
They were in a hurry.
Everyone is in front of the television enthusiastically
To watch the cricket match

But one keeps standing
In front of the fatalist
Dear soldier...
Without any entertainment
You fight with a gun
When they fight with a bat
When they are playing for the country
You are fighting for it
It is greater than nothing
For you fight not only for the country
But with your own life.
When the entire world enjoys watching the match
I pray for my loving husband
Looking at his photograph
For he is hitting the ball of the enemy with the bat of the gun
In the playground of the battlefield

Oh God!
May my prayers bless
Every soldier in the battlefield
and may Triple Gem bless them too.

Dishna Seneviratne

MY HEROIC SOLDIER

Soldier, Soldier, my heroic soldier
I write this poor rhyme
As I feel shy for being a lounger
Without joining you in time.
Our president had an inborn vision
To crush the decades old war
And you have perfected the assigned mission
By conquering the deadly foe.
Leaving behind every loved one
You went to the battle field
With the fateful fire gun
Determined not to retreat or yield.
Without proper shelter, rest or food
Exposed to the burning sun, floods or rains
Passing through many a risky wood
You have suffered immense pains
After saving thousands of hostages
You have freed our charming isle
Without causing harm or ravages
For all to live on Sri Lankan soil.
Now the entire Sri Lankan nation
Is under obligation to you
For creating a peace loving generation
Who can live without fear, doubt and woe.

Davidson Goonetilleke
