Penumbral lunar eclipse
There will be a penumbral lunar eclipse on July 07, 2009 at the moon
rise. The eclipse begins at 2.03 p.m. on July 7th daytime while the moon
enters into the penumbra of the earth's shadow and ends up at 4.14 p.m.
Sri Lanka standard time when the moon leaves the penumbra.
In a penumbral eclipse moon will not enter into the dark shadow
(umbra) of the earth, but the lighter-shadow (penumbral shadow).
This eclipse is not visible to Sri Lanka as it takes place during the
day time, said Dr. Chandana Jayaratne, consultant on astronomy to the
Arthur C Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies, and Senior Lecturer
in Physics, University of Colombo.
In this month there will be a total solar eclipse too due on July
22nd and it will be visible to us as a partial solar eclipse from the
sunrise up to about 7.12 a.m.
