by Mohammed NAALIR
The ultra modern Preliminary Care Unit at Avissawella is expected to
be a boon to Sri Lanka's health sector. In Avissawella area 10 percent
of the population are prone to diabetes and are expected to benefit
through the newly set up Preliminary Care Unit.
The Preliminary Care Unit built with the financial assistance of the
Korean International Foundation for the Health and Development (KIFHAD)
was opened by Health-Care and Nutrition Minister Nimal Siripala de
Silva.
The Korean KIFHAD granted US$ 01 million for the designing,
construction, Medical Equipment purchasing and Training staff. Meanwhile
the Health-Care and Nutrition Ministry contributed Rs. 3.8 million while
Provincial Directorate of Health Western Province Bureau granted Rs. 22
million for the project.
With the construction of the PCU there are enough beds for the
patients who are receiving treatment in Avissawella Hospital. The
hospital is the result of Housing Minister Geethanjana Gunawardane
presenting a report to KIFHAD for Korean assistance to improve the
Avissawella Base Hospital in 2005 during his visit to the Republic of
Korea in 2005.
