An award from one’s alma mater is truly memorable. Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa was all smiles when he received an award for bravery in combatting terrorism from his alma mater, Ananda College, Colombo 10. Here the Defence Secretary receives his award from President Mahinda Rajapaksa, on Friday.



Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayake paid homage to the tomb of the war memorial at the Diyatalawa Military Academy yesterday. Rubber prices bounce

Rubber prices have been increasing due to the rising demand for natural rubber from USA, UK, Germany, Pakistan and India.

Rubber Development department Director general, Wimal Rubasingha said that the prices of a kilo of smoked rubber and crepe rubber is Rs. 192 and Rs. 185 respectively.

He said that this price trend indicates a good future for natural rubber.

Shilpa pooja for 100 bhikkhus

The National Crafts Council (NCC) in collaboration with all Ceylon handicrafts association will offer 100 robes to 100 Buddhist monks on July 11 at 3.00 p.m. in Battaramulla Janakala Kendraya.

The event has been organised to thank President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, Chief of Armed Forces and all Rana Virus whose efforts have paid off in winning the war.

The Shilpa Pooja program was a brainchild of NCC Chairman Buddhi Keerthisena.

The Old Boys' Association of St. Sylvester's College, Kandy (Colombo branch) has organised an evening of joy and fellowship, Vesters' Eve '09 on July 10 from 7 p.m. onwards at the Lion Secretariat, 120/20, Vidya Mawatha, Colombo 7.
