Lieversz bowls All Ceylon to victory

Javed Burki of Pakistan made the top score of 62 in the match in the 2nd innings Pakistan total of 149.

Neil Chanmugam 4 for 28 in Pakistan first innings total of 99.

Darrel Lieversz - an outstanding bowling performance - 5 for 40 in the first innings and 4 for 28 in the second innings which helped Ceylon to beat Pakistan by 41 runs in the unofficial Test.

Intikhab Alam of Pakistan had 4 for 51 and 7 for 51 in the first and second innings of Sri Lanka. Ceylon made 152 and 137 in the two innings.

CRICKET: The present Pakistan cricket manager Intikhab Alam has been a man of many parts to Pakistan cricket, first as a player and now a coach in his twilight years. He is also no stranger to Sri Lanka from the time this emerald Island was known as Ceylon. Alam has captained his country in unofficial Test matches against Sri Lanka before this Island nation was awarded full Test status.

Memorable is, when as a member of a Pakistani Test team, he toured Sri Lanka in 1964 for an unofficial Test tour with a strong team led by Imitiaz Ahamed. This was the tour where the Lankans registered their first ever unofficial Test win. Michael Tissera led the local side which beat Pakistan by 41 runs in a low-scoring game dominated by the bowlers of either side. The match was played from August 28 to 30th in 1964 at the P. Sara Stadium.Although in the losing side, Alam had a rich haul of wickets taking 4 for 51 and 7 for 41 in the first and second innings.

Ceylon, batting first, were shot out for 152 with wicket keeper H.I.K. Fernando top scoring with 34. Spinners Intikhab Alam and Pervez Sajjad took 4 wickets a piece. In the Pakistan first innings, medium pace right-arm bowler Darrell Lieversz produced a stunning spell of swing bowling, taking 5 for 40 in 17 overs while off-spinner Neil Chanmugam backed Lieversz with the figures 4 for 28 in 12.3 overs. Pakistan were all out for 99 conceding a lead of 53 runs in the first innings to All Ceylon.

Ceylon were reduced to 137 in their second innings as Alam mesmerised the hosts, taking 7 for 41 in 22.3 overs. The visitors had to get 191 runs to win and only Javed Burki dug himself in to produce 62 runs which was the highest score in the match. Darrell Lieversz (4 for 28) and left arm spinner Anurudha Polonowita (3 for 45) did the damage as Ceylon went on to win the match by 41 runs before tea on the third and final day.
