Cambrians go with M.E.C. Fernando Trophy

RUGBY: Prince of Wales' College, Moratuwa beat Science College, Mt. Lavinia by 17 points to 6 in their inaugural rugger big match played for the M.E.C. Fernando Challenge Trophy at Havelock Park.

In this historic encounter Cambrians were captained by Anushka Uthpala Edirisinghe while Science College were led by N.P.J.K. Perera.

Former Cambrian Principal M.E.C. Fernando who introduced rugger three decades ago to Moratuwa was the chief guest at this memorable occasion.

Cambrian scored three tries, each from Shanaka Weerakkody, Anushka Uthpala and Dushan Honnanthara and a try was converted by Anushka Uthpala. For the losers Malik Perera put over two penalties. The player of the match was carried away by Cambrian skipper Anushka Uthpala and at the breather scores were 5-3.

Gamini Indrasena refereed.

In the Junior Games Science College under-16 and under-14 teams beat the Cambrians and the under-12 match was won by Cambrians.

This inaugural match was organised by the Prince of Wales' Old Boys' Rugger Committee headed by Air Commodore Ajith Abeysekera.
