The Sahasrabhisheka Foundation under the patronage of North Central Province Chief Minister Berty Premalal Dissanayake and NCP Agriculture Minister K.H. Nandasena held a series of pinkamas at the Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura in connection with Poson Poya. The pinkama was organised by Deshabandu Dr. Ariyawansha Keerthisinghe on behalf of the Foundation on the advice of Atamasthanadhipathi Most Ven.Dr. Pallegama Sirinivasa Nayake Thera. A rural electrification scheme was commissioned for the remote village of Korakahagolla in Galewela by Land and Land Development Minister Janaka Bandara Tennakoon. Here the Minister switches on the electricity supply which will benefit 500 families. Central Provincial Councillor Pramitha Tennakoon, Deputy Chairman of the Galewela Pradeshiya Sabha M.P.R. Jayatilaka and Pradeshiya Sabha member Padmaruwan Sarathchandra are also in the picture.




Higher ordination ceremony

The higher ordination ceremony of the Sri Lanka Amarapura Maha Nikaya will be held on Friday at 3.30 p.m. at the Walpola Sri Wimalaratanarama Vidya Nivasa Pirivena, Kandana.

Most Ven. Aggamahapanditha Dauldena Gnanassara Maha Nayaka Thera of the Sri Lanka Amarapura Maha Nikaya and Most Ven.

Aggamahapanditha Kotugoda Dhammawasa Anunayaka Thera, President of the Sri Lanka Amarapura Maha Sangha Sabha will preside.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne will grace the ceremony.


Death of Albertina Sisulu: Govt condoles

Senior Minister of Rural Affairs Athauda Seneviratna, a special envoy of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, represented the Government at the State funeral of Ms. Albertina Sisulu, commonly known in South Africa as the “Mother of the Nation”. The funeral was held on June 11 at the Orlanda Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Late Ms. Sisulu was highly respected as an anti-Apartheid icon and a woman who led the freedom struggle together with her late husband, Walter Sisulu who was also a former President of the African National Congress. Walter Sisulu, who died in 2003, spent 25 years in custody on Robben Island alongside Nelson Mandela.


90th anniversary of Chinese Communist Party

A public lecture will be held to mark the 90th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party at the Lakshman Kadirgamar Centre, Colombo at 3.00 p.m. Tomorrow.

The lecture will be delivered by Government Information Director Wasanthapriya Ramanayake, a senior journalist and media personality. Western Province Governor Alavi Moulana will preside while Minister D.E.W. Gunasekara will be the guest of honour.


Inter Church Pentecost rally

Sri Lanka's first ever Inter Denominational Pentecost rally for unity will be held on Saturday June 25 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Cathedral of Christ the Living Saviour, Colombo.

The rally is being organised by the Inter Church Fellowship (ICF) which believes that this is the time when the prophetic prayer of Jesus is coming to fulfillment.

In this prayer Jesus said, "May they all be one as You Father are in Me and I am in You. May they be one in Us; so that the world may believe that You have sent me." (John 17:21). There is clear evidence that this prophetic prayer of the Lord Jesus is being fulfilled in this era and we all need to cooperate with the Lord in doing His will to bring about Christian unity in diversity through the power of the Holy Spirit as a prelude to lasting peace, unity and justice in the world, the ICF says.


'Methodist Walk 2011' and Mini Fair on June 25

The 'Methodist Walk 2011', and Mini Fair coordinated by the Parent-Teachers Association with the Old Girls' Association and the Methodist College Education Society will be held on Saturday, June 25. The 'Walk' with the theme 'Be a light", will commence at 7.00 a.m. from the Upper School and wend its way along Duplication Road, Bauddhaloka Mawatha. and return to school along Galle Road, which will be followed by the Mini Fair. The event is in aid of building two floors of activity rooms for the middle school above the Science laboratories.


AGM of St. Benedict's College OBU

The 107th AGM of the Old Boys' Union of St. Benedict's College will be held on Sunday, June 26 commencing 10.30 am at the College Hall. It will be preceded by Holy Mass at 9.30 am.

All old boys will be present for the Holy Mass and the annual sessions followed by a fellowship lunch and get-together at the Old Bens Sports Club.
