Lanka-Singapore to increase environmental cooperation

Environment and Water Resource Ministry of Singapore has extended its
cooperation to Sri Lanka to share their expertise in solving environment
problems rising parallel to development activities. This was revealed
during a special discussion held between the Environment Minister Anura
Priyadarshana Yapa and Singaporean Environment and Water Resource
Minister Vivian Balakrishnan recently.
"Singapore has a very effective systems for solid waste management
and clean air which is an example for Sri Lanka and in fact three
percent of Singapore's electricity power generated comes from using
solid waste," Minister Yapa told the Sunday Observer.
Minister said if such effective results can be obtained by simply
using waste it will be ideal to understand the technology behind.
Minister Yapa emphasised that the cost-effectiveness and suitability
of technology used in developed countries must be studied before
adopting them in Sri Lanka.
It was also noted that more eco-friendly concepts and strategies are
used when building apartments in Singapore.
"In addition they pay great attention to bring greenery to these
housing projects," he said.
Minister Yapa met Minister Balakrishnan during his recent tour to
Singapore to attend the International Gem and Jewellery Exhibition 2011
in Singapore.
