A couple of weeks ago, I delivered a lecture on
Social realism in literature at the Institute for Cultural and
Ethnic Studies. The talk opened a number of lively discussions
around the topic. The purpose of this article is, in the first

admiration for the way in which it explores the limits of cinematic
