City Traffic Police to ‘silence’ errant motorists
The City Traffic Police will take stern action
against motorists and motor cyclists who fix specially manufactured
silencers that release unusual noises while driving. According to a
spokesman for the Motor Traffic Department, no motorists or motor
cyclists could use silencers that release unbearable noises as it
violates the Noise Pollution Act. City Traffic Police, SSP Chula de
Silva told the Sunday Observer that vehicles with such silencers are
not permitted to ply on roads or highways on the ground that they
cause severe inconvenience to motorists and pedestrians.

ASP caught red-handed
The Bribery sleuths attached to the Bribery
Commission went into action within 24 hours after receiving a
complaint from a woman, had a prize catch on Friday as they arrested
the most senior ASP in Nugegoda Police Division when he was
accepting Rs. One million bribe from a woman near a temple in
Wijerama, Nugegoda, official from the Bribery Commission told the
Sunday Observer.

Major breakthrough in Kahawatte killings
In April last year, villagers of Niladura in
Divulwela staged a mass public protest by burning tyres on roads to
vent their anger over the inability of the Kahawatte police to solve
the mysterious murders of elderly women in their areas. Nine elderly
women who lived alone at their homes at Kotakothana-Divulgala,
Opatha, Katange, and Niladura villages were killed by sharp cutting
instruments and their mutilated bodies covered with clothes to
conceal the wounds.
