Guard against thunder and lightning
by Ananda KANNANGARA
The Meteorology Department yesterday cautioned the public to be
vigilant over thunder and lightning during the afternoon and evenings.
According to a spokesman for the Meteorological Department the
current inter- monsoonal period will continue till the first week of May
and the South-West Monsoon will commence from the middle of next month.
Met. Dept. Senior Meteorologist, P.G. Yasarathne told the Sunday
Observer that people should disconnect the power supply of
refrigerators, heaters, water pumps, electric irons, televisions,
computers and refrain from using other electrical appliances even during
light showers, since lightning could strike at any time.
He also called upon parents to avoid children using ear phones,
Ipads, mobile phones, computers and televisions during this period.
Yasarathne also cautioned people not to stay in open places such as
near rivers, lakes, sea beaches, paddy fields, mountain tops, rooftops,
treetops and under tall trees during strong winds as there is lightning
during the evenings.
The Met. Dept. also called upon people to refrain from travelling in
open vehicles, such as in modified cars, tractors, motorcycles and even
on horseback during thunder showers, since lightning could strike such
vehicles easily.
According to police reports, 18 people including three schoolchildren
and four farmers died after being struck by lightning at Nagoda in
Kalutara, Matara, Ethimale in Galgamuwa, Deraniyagala, Imaduwa in Galle
and Ratnapura during the past two months.
