Rogue elephant on the prowl at Sellakataragama
by M. Nelson PIYARATNE, Kataragama Gr. Corr.
The residents of Punchi Dambe in Sellakataragama are highly terrified
of a rogue elephant that roam the village in the night. The pachyderm
crosses the Menik Ganga, enter the village and destroys the chena
cultivation including coconut and plantain trees. The residents fear
that this may lead to an unavoidable human-elephant conflict, unless
necessary action is taken.
Wild Life Range officer Karunasena Vithana told the media that the
electric fence is in a state of disrepair and more funds are needed
