Advanced diploma course in HR

The Defence Ministry together with the Kotelawela Defence University will launch the Advanced Diploma Course in Human Rights to educate officers in the three Armed Forces on human rights.

Legal Consultant of the Ministry Harigupta Rohanadeera told the Sunday Observer that the main objective of commencing the course was to provide an opportunity for the military officers to enhance their knowledge in protecting human rights."

With the inception of the humanitarian operation that ended in 2009, the military had educated its soldiers and officers on human rights issues. This facilitated in having a good record of protecting human rights during the war against terrorism. Compared to other countries which are facing warring situations, Sri Lanka has a significant track record of respecting human rights during the end of terrorism", he said.

Rohanadeera said that over 100 officers from the three Armed Forces would be selected for the one-year course. "This is an advanced course in human rights designed to educate the officers", he said.
