Royal in rousing 45-5 win over DSS

Defending League Champions Royal College began their rugby season with a rousing 45 points (5 goals, 2 tries) to 5 (1 try) win over D.S. Senanayake College in the Singer Under 19 League rugby match played at the Royal College Sports Complex grounds yesterday.

The winners led 31-0 at the breather.

DSSC making a come back to 'A' Division after a lapse of couple of years was simply outplayed by a superior outfit who scored five tries within the first forty minutes of play with not much resistance coming from their opponents. Royal skipper Arshard Jamaldeen had a grand match playing exceptionally well while attacking and defending.

Royal opened scoring in the 6th minute of the game when prop Iroshan de Alwis made a powerful run to score near the corner flag for an unconverted try. Minutes later winger Nimshan Jayawardene kicked ahead followed it and scored by the corner flag and Jamaldeen made no mistake with the conversion.

With DSSC defence lapsing Royal went on to plant three more tries when winger Nimshan Jayawardene gave the finishing touches to a three quarter move and Ijaz Bohoran working on the blind side touched down and Jamaldeen added the extra points with a fine conversion.

Royal extended their lead minutes before the short whistle when Arshard Jamaldeen crashed through the DSSC defence off a three quarter move.

Jamaldeen himself made the conversion and Royal took a healthy 31-0 lead at the half way mark.DSSC gave a better display in the second half particularly with some effective tackling that put the brakes on the marauding Royal forwards. DSSC three quarters while making some impressive breaks defended well at the same time.

They scored their solitary try off a short tap when Mohammed Irshad touched down for an unconverted try.

It took over twenty minutes for Royal to cross the DSSC line. It was Royal skipper Jamaldeen once again helped his side to add more valuable points by scoring off a short tap in the DSSC '25'.

During the dying stages of the match substitute centre S. Bahudeen scored for Jamaldeen to add the extra points to make it 45-5.
