Kaushal Manawadu and Imesha Sewwandi win men's and women's 6-mile sea swim

SIX-MILE SEA SWIM: Kaushal Manawadu of St. Joseph's College and K. Imesha Sewwandi of Sri Devananda Vidyalaya, Ambalangoda won the men's and women's races in the 47th Annual Six-Mile Sea Swim held on April 8. The races were started from opposite Kinross Club and the swimmers swam to a point in line with Mount Lavinia Hotel, and back to finish point opposite Kinross. The meet was sponsored by Bank of Ceylon, Dialog GSM and LOLC. Dr. Gamini Wickramasinghe, Chairman Bank of Ceylon was the chief guest.


The top three in the men’s swim - Kaushal Manage of St. Joseph’s - the winner in the centre, on his left: T.H.K.S.I. de Silva (second) and K.A.S.M. Rupesinghe on winners right came third.


Best among the women - Imesh Sewwandi who won the women event in centre, R.W.D. de Zoysa who came second on winners right and Christine Perera (on winners left) came third.

Manawadu - the Josephian swimmer won the men's race in a timing of 2 hours 25 minutes and 15 seconds while the women's winner Sewwandi was timed at 2 hours 46 minutes and 56 seconds.

While Manawadu came first in the men's event, T.H.K.S.I. de Silva of Sri Lanka Army came second and K.A.S.M. Rupasinghe of Sri Lanka Navy was third. Then in the women's event, R.W.D. de Zoysa of the Sri Lanka Army came second in the women's event with Christine Perera of Kinross came third in the women's event. In the team championship among the men, Sri Lanka Army took top place with St. Joseph's College and Civil Security Department came second and third respectively.

The winners of the Challenge Trophies:

M.G. Sirimanne Memorial Challenge Trophy - winner (men): Kaushal Manawadu (St. Joseph's College).

John Roche Challenge Trophy - winner (women): Imesha Sewwandi (Sri Devananda Vidyalaya).

Turab A. Jafferjee Challenge Trophy - men's team championship: Sri Lanka Army.

Dama Perera Challenge Trophy: 1st male competitor from Kinross Shehan Milinda.

George de Bruin Challenge Trophy: 1st female competitor from Kinross Christine Perera.

Maharajah Challenge Trophy: Youngest male competitor in the race Keneth de Silva (St. Joseph's College).

President's Challenge Trophy: Youngest female competitor in the race Imesha Sewwandi (Sri Devananda Vidyalaya).

Tissa Ariyaratne Challenge Trophy: Oldest competitor in the race S.M. Chandrapala (Kinross).
