Jaffna agricultural sector thriving- K.Poornachandran

The agricultural sector in Jaffna has revived due to the big demand
for produce in the district said the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of
Jaffna President, K.Poornachandran.
He said that large acres of land have been brought under the plough
since the end of terrorism and the region is regaining its pristine
glory.
“The farmers are happy with the return they get and are keen to
expand cultivation”, Poornachandran said. The prices of vegetables and
fruits are high due to the demand.
The price of a kilogram of onions has shot up from Rs. 25 to Rs.125.
A large stock of vegetables is transported to Dambulla daily.Jaffna is
home to a major share of Sri Lankan agricultural produce and it is known
for some of the finest mangoes and grapes.
“The Chamber helps small scale farmers to develop their crops and
boost sales. The high energy prices and frequent droughts are a major
hindrance to the agriculture sector”, the Jaffna Chamber head said.
The fisheries sector which provides a stable livelihood to a large
number of families in the North is affected by high oil prices.
The fisheries sector is one of the main beneficiaries of the peace
dividends.
“The palmyrah industry has revived with the demand for products.
Manufacturers of palmyrah products have increased production to keep
pace with the demand.
The Chamber supports cottage industries which provides a good income
to many families”, he said. Steps have been taken to reactivate the
Achchuveli Industrial Zone. Work on the project is in progress to
recommission the zone shortly.
The Chamber will help set up factories at the zone with funds from
USAID. Manufacture of mineral water, garments, soft drinks, furniture,
cosmetics and light engineering are some sectors that will be set up at
the zone.
Jaffna is a tourist destination with diverse religious and cultural
attractions such as the Nallur temple, Naga Vihara, the Jaffna fort and
the lagoon which provides a breath-taking view to visitors.Lack of
lodging facilities and eateries impedes the growth of the lucrative
industry. Poornachandran said that hoteliers have commenced building
hotels and resorts in Jaffna which could provide accommodation to a
large number of visitors. “Business activities are a bit dull these days
due to the credit curtailed by banks”, he said.
