Forest fires destroy over 7,000 acres of land
by Ananda KANNANGARA
The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) yesterday confirmed that over
7,000 acres of valuable land in the country had been destroyed following
the 18 forest fires during the past two weeks and warned forest rangers
countrywide to be extra vigilant over poachers who destroy forest lands
by setting fire.
According to a spokesman for the DMC, the recent forest fires in
Badulla, Matale, Nuwara Eliya, Moneragala and the Kandy districts were
suspected to be intentionally carried out by people in those areas to
hunt animals, cut valuable trees and obtain fresh grass for cattle.
Deputy Director DMC, Sarath Lal Kumara told the Sunday Observer that
destructive elements in forest areas were behind the forest fires and
steps have already been taken to crack down on such culprits and stern
action will be taken against them. He said the prompt assistance by the
police, Air Force and Local Government authorities in these areas had
immensely helped extinguish many forest fires.
The latest forest fire which broke out on Wednesday night at Passara
in the Badulla district had destroyed over 500 acres of land.
Around 20 carcases of rare animals and birds had been found in the
vicinity.
The DMC Director called upon the public to extend their support to
the DMC’s endeavour to protect forest reserves countrywide which helps
improve water resources and keeps the environment green.
