Equipment for self-employment worth Rs. 5 million were donated to
widows in the Anuradhapura district at a ceremony held at Swarnapali
Girls School, Anuradhapura under the patronage of Child Development and
Women's Affairs Minister Tissa Karalliyadda.
Over 500 widows who belong to the lowest income groups in the 22
Divisional Secretarys' Divisions in the Anuradhapura district received
equipment such as water pumps, sewing-machines, refrigerators,
kitchenware and agricultural kits.
"Vested interests, both local and international, are not happy with
the Government because under the stewardship of President Mahinda
Rajapaksa terrorism was eliminated from the country", the Minister said.
Women and Children were the most affected by the three decade long
terrorism, he said. North Central Provincial Councillor Kalyani
Karalliyadde and Women's Affairs Ministry Secretary Sumithra Rahubadda
addressed the meeting.
