"Fun on stage" promises to be an evening of entertainment for the
entire family. Directed by Sashi Mendis, this evening of children's
drama will go on the boards at the Punchi Theatre on June 30 and July 1
at 6.30 pm.
"Fun on stage" presents three plays. Each play is unique and
ingenious and is bound to capture the interest and imagination of a
child. Approximately, 50 children are excited about performing the three
plays and two other short items. The students are a set of juniors
taking drama classes with Sashi on a regular basis.
"Save the human" by a British playwright is one of the three plays
and it is fascinatingly about a world ruled by animals. In this story,
the humans have made a mess of their livesand the animals have taken
over. The animals rule the world. However, as in the world of today,
there is abuse. In this instance, animals begin to abuse the humans.
So, there springs up a group of animals who are determined to ' save
the human'. The play is clever, insightful, and thought provoking. "Save
The Human" highlights the idealism inherent in protecting rights and how
it can go wrong. Then there is a modernised and clever adaptation of the
age-old poem "The Owl and the Pussycat".
The play brings on stage a bizarre set of characters who are sure to
have any child amused. They are "The Runcible Spoon", Mr and Mrs Quangle
Wangle, 'The Dong and the Pig' with a ring at the end of her nose.
No, Not I by an Indian playwright is a short play, in which a set of
children makes up their own interesting story. The play has been adapted
with a few Sinhala phrases thrown in to bring it closer home and to
provoke laughter.
The students taking part in 'Fun on stage' have certainly had a lot
of fun working towards the production. It has built their confidence and
enhanced their skills of performance. And when the plays and items go on
the boards it would be a pleasant experience for the audience.
