Kandy SC fancied to beat Police at Nittawela today
by S.M. Jiffrey ABDEEN -Kandy Sports Corr.
RUGBY: The defending league champions Kandy Sports Club should go out
favourites when they take on Police Sports Club in a 'Key' Dialog Rugby
League inter-club match to be played at the Nittawela Rugby Stadium
today with the kick-off scheduled for 4.30 p.m.
Kandy Sports Club did well to defeat the star-studded Upcountry Lions
in their 'lung opener' but appeared to be unimpressive in their last
match against CH & FC which saw them post a 18-10 win with the loser's
coming through a penalty and a penalty try and the Kandy team need not
worry much over it.
But in the match against the Police, they should really show their
teeth and pile up the points to show what they are capable of, to sound
a warning to the other clubs.
One area Kandy should seriously look into is their spot kicking which
has left much to be desired in the two matches so far.
They have two good place-kickers in skipper Saliya Kumara and winger
Nuwan Hettiarachchi and they should deliver the goods as otherwise
valuable points should go a begging and this could be vital in a close
game.
At the practices held on Thursday at Nittawela, Kandy were seen with
their centre and foreign player Eddie Lolohea being tried to take the
place kicks to meet any contingency. He is a Tongan having played his
rugby in Auckland, New Zealand.
Police led by forward Romesh Arachige is a tough side and they have
the potential to create an upset. They do not have big names but they
play as a well moulded side which as the success of the policemen over
the years. Police are trying this year to get back their pristine glory.
