82nd Sir John Tarbat Senior Athletics Championship:

Decade-old 800m record shattered

Nine new meet records were set up on the second day of the 82nd Sir John Tarbat Senior Athletics Championship, which continued at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium, Diyagama yesterday.

M N Dilhani of Kuliyapitiya Central College broke a ten-year-old record in the Girls Under-16 800m clocking 2.18.29, breaking the previous record of 2.19.3 set by Nelum Karunartane of Elapatha MMV, Ratnapura in 2002 which was the highlight of yesterday's action.

Today is the final day of the championship, which is organized by the Sri Lanka Schools Athletics Association with the sponsorship of Ritzbury Chocolates.

Triple Jump: 1 R Wickramaratne (Maristella College) 13.67m, 2 P B Herath (Sri Sumangala, Kandy) 13.13m, 3 B T Pitawela (Trinity College, Kandy) 12.79m

[Boys Under-18]

Under-18 Javelin Throw: 1 D K Dayaratne (Makulpotha MV) 64.01m, 2 Nuwan Kumara (Royal College, Polonnaruwa) 61.15m, 3 H M Fernando (Joseph's Vas, Wannappuwa) 58.84m.

Pole Vault: 1 B Lavanan (Arunodaya College, Jaffna) 3.77m, 2 S Eranga (Maristella, Negombo) 3.40m, 3 D S Dinusha (A Ratnayake MMV, Walala) 3.30m.

4x100m: 1 St Peter's College, Colombo 43.43, 2 Ananda College 44.16, 3 Joseph Vaz, Wennappuwa 44.27.

Pole vault – under-20 boys: 1. M.H.I. Sandaruwan (A. Rathnayake MMV, 4.20 m, 2. S. Nandalalan (Arunodaya College, Jaffna) 3.50 m, 3. W.M.M. Madushan (Nandimithra MV, Pallama) 3.40 m.
