Chess winners of Rahula College
Playing chess has caught up with the young ones in the cities and
outstations as well. This week chess champions from Rahula College,
Matara adorn the cover of our Junior magazine. The winner is a grade 6
student of Rahula College, Suhada Sandeepa Nanayakkara who has won the
Inter School under 10 Chess championship 2010 and 2011 conducted by the
Sri Lanka Schools Chess Association of the Southern Province in addition
to many other chess championships. He is a versatile artiste as well and
has won many awards. He won the first place for Rahula College at the
Scholarship examination in 2012 and scored 191 marks.
Tharik Sansika Punchihewa who is a Grade Eight student of Rahula
College won the southern Province 2010 Chess Championship. He is an ace
shuttler and has won the All-Island first place in the All Island
Badminton tournament and was selected as 'Upcoming Athlete' for 2012. He
has won the 100 metres first place in the Southern province for 2012.
Thirteen-year-old, Dimuthu Hewa won the Maths and Science Olympiad
Gold Medal in 2012 held in Lucknow, India where ten countries
participated while the Silver Medal was won by A.G. Dhushara Gamidhu who
is twelve-years old.
Thisadu Sidnukha Guneratne who is ten years old won the Bronze medal
at the Southern province Chess Championship .
Eight-year-old W. Sahan Lakshitha won the merit award in the Under
Seven category at the All-Island Chess Championship organised by the Sri
Lanka Chess Federation. He has won other chess championships as well. In
some instances he won the first place.
