Kandy boxers excel

Boxers from Kandy stamped their class when they won the championship
for both men and women at the Men's Women's Youth Boxing Championship
for the Lt. General Jagath Jayasuriya challenge Trophy organised by the
Amateur Boxing Association of Sri Lanka (ABSL) and worked off at the
Sports Ministry Gymnasium Colombo during the week.

St. Sylvester's College - a big name in schools boxing in the sixties
and seventies won the championship for men with a total of 15 points. In
second place was Vidyartha College with 9 points and second runner-up
was Dharmaraja College with 6 points.
This four-day championship saw boxing teams from all parts of the
country participate. Kandy schools which won five out of the ten finals
had 14 boxers in the ring at the finals. Though St. Sylvester's College
were not in the finals, they performed sufficiently in the earlier
rounds to win the championship title. Ruchira Gunasena of Sivali College
was adjudged best Boxer among the boys when he outclassed B.D.P. Kumara
of St. Sylvester's College in the Bantam Weight under 56 kilogramme
category.
The Best Loser was Mohammed Ziard of Trinity College who lost on a
split 9-10 decision to R.M.H.P. Perera of Pilimatalawa Central College
in the under 69 kg. category.
The girls from Pilimatalawa Central College - an essentially a rural
area won the championship title for women with 17 points and Swarnajothi
National School, Peradeniya finished runner-up with 13 points. Occupying
the third spot was MAS Southern Boxing Club with 10 points. It was a
gritty performance by the women boxers from Pilimatalawa Central College
who used their natural strength to blunt their opponents. They had seven
finalists and two of them won their bouts. Swarnajothi National School
too had two wins in the finals. In all Kandy schools won four of the
eight finals and coupled with the lifting of both championship runner up
titles displayed their dominance in this ring sport. Kanchana Lalani of
MAS Southern BC won the Best Boxers award while Samudra Bandara of
Pilimatalawa Central College was adjudged the Best Loser.
